anyone have luck finding supplies?

hi everyone!

so I went to some thrift stores today and I didn't have any luck finding frames. Has anyone else been able to find some? Maybe we can just use the corners that Larice has if no one has found any whole frames...

I've been thinking about our concept of wigs with tea cups and dinnerware and I was thinking what if we just had tea cups tied on string hanging in the frames and we could be selling tea? So it would link into geisha because of the tea ceremony and we could have the background be like a japanese print? Unless if anyone has had luck finding affordable wigs... but I know I haven't and I don't see any posts about it so I was just assuming.. anyway, I'm going to look for frames again tomorrow but I just wanted to keep everyone updated on my progress of what I've been finding..

Hope everyone's having a good weekend!

monday class

I am beyond sorry for not being there monday, we had an emergency at work and I had to come in. I can gather from the posts that you were able to find a new direction. I love the color scheme. I had these mock-fans I made at home.... I was thinking we could have used the idea, but let me know if that is way out of the scheme now.

dinnerware/background

Here's a picture of the dinnerware I have.

Larice- I really like the idea of felt for the background, if everyone else agrees I think we should go ahead and do that but I'll still go to Joanne's tomorrow just to check out other options but if I don't find anything I say we for sure go with the felt from Michael's. I'm not sure about using just frame corners, I definitely prefer the idea of using entire frames- does anyone have time in the next couple days to see where we might be able to find some? I think if we had 3 frames it would look really nice.

Got some free framing samples today. Maybe we can use the corners instead of real frames??

Priced a few materials at Micheal's:

tea cups and dinner ware

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to add on to Larice's post below and also apologize for our rocky start. I really think this idea is great though and I know we can do it! My dinnerware at home is black and white (salad plate, dinner plate and soup bowl) I have 4 of each. I will take a picture of it when I get home later today. I can also get these tea cups at work that I can return after the project:

http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=78704&navAction=jump&search=true&parentid=SEARCH_RESULTS

I could just get random letters or we could spell something? Let me know what you think.

Also, I can go to Joannes fabric after work tomorrow to see if I can find some inexpensive fabric for the back drop.

Larice- could you post on here the dimensions of the wall? I think you are the only one who wrote them down...Thanks!

Different Direction

So we are switching gears and revisiting our idea of black wigs and red fans. I liked this idea from the beginning. I assume our color scheme is now, red, black, and white and the kimono is out. As a group we need to decide what merchandise we are displaying. I suggest plate ware.

Also, I was a bit frustrated in class tonight because I feel we haven't communicated well so far, but I apologize for reflecting this on the group and hope we can work better as a team completing our first project!

I am available to meet with anyone interested in shopping for materials. If we can try to coordinate or schedule I can meet for a couple hours this week.

Hi everyone,

So last week Durand had accidentally left me off of the group listing sheet so I talked to him and he wanted me to email him to make sure he didn't accidentally drop me. Well anyway he just responded to my email and he didn't drop me but he's moving me to group 5. So unfortunately I'm no longer in our group, I have no clue why! Sorry!

Brainstorming Blossoms

Button Blossoms

Blossoms by buttons. It seems we are talking A LOT about fans, but we have no idea what to do with them! This seems ideal for the wall, but would require thoughtful planning. We would need buttons galore!! I have mad buttons to donate!!

Origami Cherry Blossoms

Blossoms themselves are folded paper, the stems on which they are attached are curly willow.

Craft tissu
e paper blossoms

Make cherry blossoms by adding tissue paper. Gather branches that have fallen outside; let dry, if necessary. Cut out 2-inch squares of pink tissue, pinch tightly in the middle to create blooms, and affix them to branches with white glue. This is a very simple and basic idea to craft our own cherry blossoms!

Cherry Blossom LED Lights

I found several cool images with illuminated cherry blossoms. I got the idea at link below. The website gives step-by-step instructions, posted by a woman who is a SF Crafter so, stores where materials can be purchase include local retailers. Online supplier info too.

fans fans fans

I found this wholesale shop that sells tons on fans for dirt cheap (something like 2 dollars for a dozen)...

(F.Y.I. I changed address to link by in 'edit post' mode.... Larice)

I loved the wooden handles and red color... even having a few as accent pieces, combined with the hand made ones could work.

If I ordered within this week, the package should arrive in 5 days... anyone think these would be helpful?

(back & front views)
i just posted a comment on the last message..im just too lazy to copy it here hehe. anyway, i am posting the small fan i found at work. it looks easy to make..the paper fans luisa posted are pretty easy to do, i remember doing those when i was younger, you just basically fold the paper and tie it.

FROM AUDRA -- The WALL

Audra sent a sketch. Very cool. If I am interpreting correctly, it is the kimono embellished on top with fans that reminds me of a peacock tail. I like this composition. It mimics nature. I am concerned about the constraints of working with natural cherry blossoms and the idea that we cut them without permission. Maybe you all disagree, but I'd like to make our own with similar materials. How do you feel group?

I will be home Sunday evening to work onmy sketch idea, post it, and get your feedback hopefully by Monday night. I have to formalize the REQUEST FORM for this project that is due Tuesday at that time as well. Please keep posting your ideas and discoveries!

D.I.Y. FANS!!

I am really into the idea of making fans. Rather than searching for pre-made we can try these simple steps. I found a 'kids craft' activity. How hard can it be?? How can we make them more fabulous?!?!

IDEA:

Basic Materials:

A piece of paper about 1m by 20cm.

Two wide popsicle sticks
glue
Sticky tape
Coloring pens (just one example)

Steps:

1-Decorate paper (Geisha inspired)

*butterflies

*blossom

*calligraphy

etc.

2-‘Pleat’ the paper into folds about 1 1/2cm wide.

Glue a popsicle stick onto each end of the paper. Sticks should stick out about 2cm above the top of the paper.

ONE more example......

It doesn't get any simpler than this!

FOLD paper and finish off with really nice string, rope, something we can tie into knot!!

Fan

hi. so i went to japantown this afternoon and found a couple of fans. ididnt buy any of them yet. i found a wooden fan like alyssa posted, it was 1.56 with tax. paper fans were i think $0.65 - less than $2.00 there were designs on them, and they were all different colors. although i found a plain white one as well. i just dont know if they have enough if we decide we want the plain ones. also, my boss might bring some to work tomorrow for me to check (if he doesnt forget!!!lol). so let me know what you guys want so i can go back to jtown before class on tuesday. oh also, i took pictures of the fans but then i just couldnt figure out how il send it online.haha

fans

Hi everyone,

I found two different kinds of fans but I didn't buy them yet because I wanted to get your opinions and see if anyone had any luck finding some that are maybe less expensive in china town or japan town. .. I found one style that is the paper fan for 79 cents each but they are really wierd prints like random beach and sunset drawings so we would have to paint them, I also found some all wood ones with a design cut out for $2 each, I know it's not that expensive but if we want to use the idea of covering the whole wall with them it would be. Personally, the idea I like best is to paint paper fans to be solid colors and use them as the back drop- we can just pin them to the wall with flat push pins; and hang the kimono on a dowel like we talked about and then somehow incorporate the cherry blossoms? Anyone else have a favorite idea? I attached a picture of the wooden fans I found. Let me know if you guys like them and I can go back and get them and/or the paper ones.

japantown

hi. im going to japantown tomorrow to look for fans, if you guys need anything just text or call me since my phone broke, i lost your numbers. my manager said that he might have some fans at home so he's bringing them to work on friday for me to see, (also in case i dont find any at japantown). and if neither works out, ill try to go to chinatown on saturday. oh and actually we can make small fans from paper, i found a random small paper fan at work, and we can use it as a guide.

anyway, im attaching also a picture of some hair sticks i have here at home, they look kinda like japanese..

oh and i was thinking for the wall display, maybe we can buy/make a large wooden frame with hollow body and just put the kimono, fan, cherry blossom and maybe a scroll in the middle of the frame(inside, in a sense). so that its easy and simple.

Geisha Elements

I added this photo for
the simplicity in lines/ color- yet strong message. I am sure we can either find or make simple screens like these for the background border...
